  • Rutgers Retention Schedule
    This is the key to finding the names of all records that Rutgers maintains, and, even more importantly, the actual names of the records. This enables you to ask for these records under OPRA.
  • Rutgers Office of Institutional Research
    The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) at Rutgers is jammed with good reports, statistics and facts, many of them in Excel format, and ready for you to use in a story.
  • Rutgers Administrative structure
    This page from the Rutgers website shows the structure of how Rutgers is governed. It is important in finding which person or office has control of what policies.
  • Rutgers OIR Fact Book
    This site is part of the Office of Institutional Research at Rutgers and is filled with goodies.
  • Rutgers — About the university
    A page of links to many other places on the Rutgers website that allows you to understand how the university is run, its history, its policies, and many other valuable areas. It goes into almost every major category on administration and university life. Use this page as a starting point to research Rutgers.

    This is a site made for reporters who cover investigative reporting. IRE is filled with databases, and most of them are in Excel format.

    A lot of good property tax information is located here.

    Massive amounts of information here on everything in New Jersey.
  • U.S. Census
    This site is one of the most useful for finding information for all types of stories. Go here first to see what information you can find -- a lot more than just counting people. It is very vast and ought not to be accessed for the first time under deadline pressure. Take a few hours and work your way through it to see what's behind what.
  • OPRA I (pronounced OPRAH)
    The Foundation for Open government's web page. A good start to understand how the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) works. Remember: Rutgers is a public institution and falls under OPRA.
  • OPRA II
    The state of New Jersey's Government Records Council site. It administers OPRA.
  • OPRA III
    This is the actual Open Public Records Act law, passed in 2002. It's set up so you can reference any part of it. A good site!

    This article from the Sparta Independent gives a pretty good idea of what kinds of problems you might expect when you try to use OPRA to obtain public records.

    This page links to almost every college in New Jersey. Use this to find comparisons to Rutgers.
  • Rutgers Library
    This is the main site of the Rutgers Library. it leads to a most wonderful world of knowledge. On here are not only books, but all kinds of information, especially periodicals that contain very detailed information about specific subjects.
  • Rutgers Library Searchpath
    This is an important part of understanding the Rutgers Library system. Make sure you go through all the pages and lessons to understand what is where in the library. Also, do not hesitate to put a book on call if it is out of the library. In many cases, it arrives within a few days, and you can pick it up.
  • Great Middlesex County Links
    This is a site that has many links about Middlesex County. A great place to start if you are researching a person or place within the county. It also has links to other counties and the state of New Jersey. Start here.
  • New Jersey law
    This is a doorway site that leads into multiple other sites, all generally descriptive of New Jersey law. Go to this when you have tons of research on any legal issue, especially if it's related to Rutgers. This site links to regulations, codes of attorney conduct, who has been disciplined, administrative decisions, major municipal ordinances, law-related organizations, and legal sites that relate to specific topics. A good tool.

    Sree Sreenivasan is a Columbia University professor whose subject of expertise is helping people, especially journalists, find things on the internet. Go through this site for a ton of ideas for stories, as well as where to find them.
  • SREE II
    This site gives direct help in finding newsworthy stories.
  • SREE III
    This is a Poynter site that gives excellent story ideas.
  • Find people
    You can find many famous people here. This gives you a brief background on each one and shows how some relate to others.
  • Valuable journalism links
    This page from the Journalism Resources Institute in SCILS lists many journalism websites that discuss issues in the field plus the state of journalism today. It also is the link to many journalism organizations.
  • Rutgers Focus magazine/New Stadium
    This is the official word of Rutgers, mostly about and for employees of the university. This issue contain the university's position on the new stadium.
  • Sources of useful databases
    This is a link through the Home News Tribune website to all sorts of things: state (including Rutgers) salaries, death records, just a lot of stuff.

    This is the latest policy issued by Rutgers on sexual harassment.

    This site shows who gave how much money to federal office seekers. It is constantly updated. Look, and you may find some Rutgers officials.
